On the weekend of February 22-24, the Major Atom Girls competed at the annual Blessed Sacrament Tournament in Hamilton. The weekend featured 56 teams with the Major Atoms playing in Division 1. The girls went undefeated and claimed first overall - well done ladies!!
That may seem impressive to most, but more important than the medals and the wins was the tribute the team paid to one of the players from Blessed Sacrament that passed away this past summer from a sudden and unexpected brain aneurysm. In Sydney Wood's honour, a speech was given by Rick Coristine and each player on the Blessed team was given a pair of striped socks - the same kind Sydney liked to wear - and a signed team poster was presented to the Wood family. The entire team was presented with heart patches to be worn on their jackets.
For each game, the opposing coach picked a "For the Lover of the Game" recipient who showed the most heart during that game. The choice was mainly based on the defensive effort made during the game. Winners from Chatham were: Chloe Duffy, Megan Hitchcock, Joelle Tetrault, Taryn Dudley and Maggie Denys.
Congratulations to the entire Major Atom girls team and the coaching staff for reminding all of us that it is not the score and who wins and losses, but that playing with heart is what makes a team successful.
